Akiko
The delightful Akiko Otao, soprano star and fabulous model. She was a delight to shoot, and I hope we get a chance to work together again some time soon.

Had an awesome photo shoot with the fabulous Akiko Otao (Tokyo based soprano) today, in collaboration with my lovely friends (and students) Misaki and Nana from Mint Salon. SO MUCH FUN! Then went back to Kichijoji for a night of rabble rousing with Christian, Sandi, Andrea, Beck, Dr Dave and Darin drinking park beers, eating Thai dinner, karaoke-ing for a couple hours then an hilarious stopover at Mikorins before heading home for a slumber party…..

Life is good

Yuiko in Koganei Koen yesterday

Christian plays faun

They’ve been married for a couple of years now

Yama-chan disappeared to hug trees for a while

Koganei Koen is a beautiful, huge park. Western Tokyo is full of them, I’m slowly realising.

Went drinking with friends during the week, Kattsun was one of them. This is the best photo I took that night.

The mysterious Motorbike Samurai
Life is good when the weather warms up, the sun comes out, you get some days off and you get taken to dinner by a guy you’ve had a crush on for 2 years.

Aureole

Back in December, while she was visiting me on her way back to Australia, Aureole agreed to pose for me while I experimented with all 3 of my cameras to see how they all performed. The Holga won, hands down, creating some beautiful atmospheric images that now form an important series in mOnOchrOmic, the exhibition open now. But the Canon G3 and 300D did OK jobs too. I just posted a few of the better ones to flickr – go take a look at Aureole in the bath….
It was fun doing this. We tried to make the water all milky, using bathsalts and, well… milk. But when she put her head under water, her hair dye ran turning the water a dark red. She is really comfortable in front of a camera, and being as tattooed as she is, she’s a popular subject for her photographer friends. It was a great setting to do an experimental shoot like this, because it was really relaxed and casual and I got to play with cameras and settings and light and so on in a really comfortable atmosphere. I’m looking forward to her next visit so we can try out something new.

Silly season greetings
Merry Christmas from me, and the sexy santa ladyboys Haku and Mat-sun!
Apologies for the radio silence. Been drunk for a couple of weeks it seems. Friends visiting from home, parties to go to, sightseeing to do, gigs to go to, tattoo’s to get. When things settle down a little next week, I promise an abundance of posts and photos – including a video and heaps of pics from the last ever ever ever Arab Strap show in the world. Oh what a night.
On a more serious note, I wanna wish you all a lovely Christmas season and of course, a fantastic 2007. I’ve had a great year and am looking forward to heading into the new year the happiest I’ve been in yonks. Thanks to my supportive family, in particular my incredible brother, David – who is ALWAYS there for me, my wonderful friends both here in Japan and back in Australia, all my colleagues and students here in Tokyo and to you – dear readers, for making my life the excellent thing that it has become.
PS: just uploaded a heap of pics to my flickr page, including some from the Arab Strap show.
W.I.G. out. Part One

Today was the inaugural W.I.G. out event. I haven’t mentioned W.I.G. here yet and I really should have written about it when I got home last night and posted this entry but I was a wee bit tipsy and forgot.
W.I.G.: Warm Inner Glow. The name of our new club.
Kat, Christian and I are all Brisbane kids (from the same town in sub-tropical Queensland) and we hate winter with a passion. It sends us all quite batty. In a bad way. So we have come up with an experimental defense plan… The Warm Inner Glow club will have monthly expeditions all through winter designed specifically to cheer up we pathetic little tropical kids. Octobers W.I.G. Out was Christian’s plan, November will be mine (which will be easy coz it’s my Bday month although Kat and Daz will be in The States for most of the month) and December will be Kat’s plan.
2/3rds of the W.I.G. Out club spent the day at the Earth Festival at Yoyogi today. Fabulous, and the plan worked, not only were we full of warm-inner-glow but also beer and general merriment. Kat was off with an old friend recovering from last nights Peaches show last night and enjoying an onsen, but she’ll definitely be at the next one! A few more random shots over at Flickr.

The eyes have it…

Another one of our exchange students, hanging around in the library. He may look suicidal in this pic but it’s all just show (most of the time). He does a great Kazakhi accent that just cracks me up. He is quite the deadpan comic and is in the process of becoming trilingual. Damn smarty pants. Great eyes, ne.

Just some people

This utterly fabulous wench is my flatmate, Charlene. We’ve started going on weekly dinner/drinkin’ dates because if we didn’t do that we’d almost never see each other.

And this fabulous wench is yours truly. I promised Charlene that if I posted that pic of her that I would put up the one she took of me too.

Kat and Darin. The local crew. They live 10 minutes bike ride away. We drink way too much beer together which is quite fun. They are married and are utterly devoted to their 2 guinea pigs. Oh, and their beer. Oh, and their park.

Kat, Jenn and Jo – all members of the Tokyo Stitch and Bitch. This was for a special knitty calendar photoshoot yesterday. Lots of fun had by all.

Tyler just got back from his bro’s wedding in the States. We had a coffee at Starbucks last week.

Sarah. Yes, the hanami bride! This is at the Shinjuku Eye, near the west exit of the station.

The gorgeous Vivien in Harmonika Yokocho, Kichijoji one day last week.

Joanna. The most photogenic person I’ve ever met! This photo was taken in a fishy alley in Harmonika Yokocho, Kichijoji.

Christian and Yuiko. Christian is my best friend here. We’re from the same home town, and used to work at the Zoo together, back in Brisbane. That makes for a pretty special bond… We went to the Earth Festival in Yoyogi yesterday after the knitters shoot.

Since I don’t see these people very much any more, I was determined to try to get some decent portraits.
And since I haven’t been posting much lately, I thought I’d make up for it by sharing some of these portraits with ya’ll. There’ll be some more to come…..

On Saturday I did my first serious professional photographic session with my singing friend Joanna who is about to launch a career in music, voice-overs and acting in Japan. It was good fun and I’m pretty happy with the results…
