I adore this photo. Can you see her? The little one looking up at her future in the skies?
A line of little kids waiting to dance a traditional Obon dance at the Inokashira Obon matsuri. This little matsuri (festival) is a very small, local affair, with a small stage for the taiko drums and dancers to do their thang. Some of the more popular dances saw spontaneous rings of people dancing in a circle around the outside of the stage.
Simply lovely.

The boys from Mint Salon, Tsushi and Haku. You may remember them from the Christmas photos…
Guess who just got her long lost Powerbook back? With ALL data saved! There was a knock at the door, and there was the delivery box… just like that. Glad it didn’t take the month they said it would….
Anyway, these photos were taken what seems like ages ago, just before the computer went for it’s little adventure, and I was disconsolate at the thought they might be lost… it was SUCH a great day, we had a ball, and it went on till late in a cool little restaurant in Naka Meguro where we drank wine and ate excellent traditional style Japanese food till we were all stumbling and mumbling. It must have made a weird sight – a really drunk hakujin in a kimono stumbling (well, trotting actually, doing little kimono steps) home through Shibuya and then riding a bike home from the station….. that part was real tricky but great fun.
Asashoryu

Yesterday was the opening day of the January 2006 Sumo Grand Tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. This is the current undefeatable yokozuna (champion), Mongolion Asashoryu doing his official opening ritual to open the Rikishi (upper rankings) part of the Tournament.
More to come. Right now I’m off to the onsen with Kat and Darin who got back from their Queensland road trip on Saturday. Last night I ate a real Bowen mango. That will mean nothing to anyone except Queenslanders stranded in deep winters far away from summer. It was utterly delicious.
